Kainos is a Detroit-based consultancy dedicated to transforming high-potential neighborhoods into vibrant, thriving places to live, work, and worship. We partner with congregations and municipalities in legacy cities, equipping them with tools, partnerships, and strategies to build sustainable growth and resilience.

WHY WE EXIST
Middle neighborhoods are the backbone of America’s cities—home to working families, diverse housing, and deep community roots. Yet many face disinvestment and instability. Kainos believes these neighborhoods can thrive and become self-sustaining with catalytic revitalization and strategic neighborhood stabilization. Community-focused congregations and municipal leaders are important constituencies for driving and sustaining change. Forward thinking strategies to address the quality of housing stock, retain and grow homeownership, preserve and attract amenities, and ensure residents can connect with job centers are all vital to strengthening and advancing these communities. By partnering with congregations and municipal leaders to execute effective strategies, and sharing resources and knowledge with the field, Kainos will be part of the solution, helping to set these neighborhoods on a trajectory of stability and growth.
LEADERSHIP
Kainos is led by Sherita Smith, MPA and Lisa Campbell, MUP, MPA, experienced community and economic development professionals having worked from grassroots to corporate in community development, government and finance with a grounded understanding of effective strategies, tools and financing structures needed to advance community flourishing. Our team combines strategic expertise with lived experience, bringing unique insights and trusted relationships to every project.
